The following scholarships are open to communications students in the journalism emphasis, or pre-comms/incoming freshman/transfer students interested in journalism, if noted on the description.

Please read the criteria below carefully before applying.

You will fill out a single online application to be considered for these scholarships. All applications require you to upload a resume and your full progress report from AIM.  Individual scholarships have other requirements as described below.

LaVieve Huish Earl Scholarship (Print/Digital Journalism)

Award: $500 scholarship
Application deadline: February 1

Selection criteria and requirements:

• Undergraduate student in the print/digital journalism emphasis
• One semester of scholarship eligibility
• 3.0 GPA or better
• Must demonstrate financial need (see application for further instructions)
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon

Scripps League / N. LaVerl Christensen Scholarship (Print/Digital Journalism)

Award: Full-tuition scholarship for one or two semesters (May be split among two students)
Application deadline: February 1

Selection criteria and requirements:

• Print/Digital Media Journalism student, with junior or early senior standing
• 3.0 GPA or better
• Attach portfolio per application instructions
• Committed to completing college education
• Academic merit
• This scholarship is awarded based on talent AND financial need.
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon

Deseret News Scholarships (Print/Digital Journalism)

Award: Two students will be selected to receive a full tuition scholarship for one semester
Application deadline: February 1

Selection criteria and requirements:

• Print/multimedia journalism student with 3.0 or higher GPA
• Must have at least one full semester of school remaining
• Must show evidence of quality reporting and writing that demonstrates professionalism and ethical standards
• Must submit portfolio with application (see application for portfolio instructions)
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon and the Deseret Management Corporation Scholarship Banquet.

Peggy Hughes Scholarship (Broadcast and Print/Digital)

Award: $1,000 annual scholarship
Application deadline: February 1

Selection criteria and requirements:

• Undergraduate print or broadcast journalism student
• Preference given to students emulating the values of Peggy Hughes. Peggy was a single mother who was able to complete her BYU education with the assistance of a scholarship, which inspired her to create this scholarship to help other students overcome financial obstacles.
• At least one semester of college left
• Must demonstrate financial need (see application for further instructions).
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon

KSL Scholarships (Broadcast Journalism)

Award: Two students will be selected to receive a full tuition scholarship for one semester
Application deadline: February 1

Selection criteria and requirements:

• Broadcast journalism student with 3.0 or higher GPA
• Must have at least one full semester of school remaining
• Must show evidence of quality reporting or producing that demonstrates professionalism and ethical standards
• Must submit performance reel or tape with application (see application for further portfolio instructions)
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon and the Deseret Management Corporation Scholarship Banquet.

Walt Lowe Endowed Scholarship

Award: $1,500 scholarship for two students
Application deadline: February 1

Selection criteria and requirements:

• News Media/Journalism student
• 3.0 or higher GPA
• Must show financial need
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon.

Howard E. and Deloris K. Wall Communications Print/Broadcast Journalism Scholarship

Award: $2,500 for up to four students
Application deadline: February 1

Selection criteria and requirements:

• Undergraduate student in the broadcast or print/digital journalism emphasis
• Must show financial need (see application for instructions)
• 3.2 GPA or better
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon

Talent Awards (for undergrad comms, pre-comms, transferring, or incoming students)

Award: up to ½ tuition

Application deadline: February 1

Selection criteria and requirements:

• Undergraduate Communications major or student tracking to enter any Communications emphasis (advertising, communications studies, journalism, public relations).
• Pre-comms, incoming freshman, or transfer student planning to major in Communications.
• Must submit portfolio, including writing samples/video tape and/or letters of recommendation (Please make a copy of any items submitted. Do not submit your only copy.) See application for portfolio instructions.
• Must demonstrate talent in chosen area of study.
